Heineken recently used their financial power to create a special type of double-walled glassware that has the ability to bring a beer down to 0-2 degrees Centigrade (that's 32-35.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in only five minutes. The double-walled glass is placed into the freezer for an hour, after which the liquid in the walls of the glass will rapidly cool any beverage placed into it.
The glassware is called the Ellipse Vriesglass, and is currently being tested in the Netherlands at the low price of £8.
While this is just another segment in the Temperature Wars that big beer companies seem obsessed with (e.g., labels that tell you with the magic of sight that a beer is cold), it's definitely a more practical one. Personally, I'd like to see what else we can stuff into this glass to rapidly cool.
Just brought that case of seltzer home from the store? Throw it in the Freezy-Cup! My delightfully chilled sandwich has fallen in temperature. Stuff it in the cup! This will protect it from the hot Mexican sun. Why yes, I would love to traverse to a summertime picnic with this stick of perfectly chilled garlic butter. T-1000 after you? Trick it into the cup and make your hasty escape!
