In a huge move for the American craft beer community, Boston Beer and Dogfish Head have agreed to a merger valued at $300 million dollars.
Bringing together two giants of the industry, the merger is creating a new beer team comprised of Boston Beer's Jim Koch and Dogfish Head's Sam Calagione as well as creating a new, iconic American brand. Between the two, this new beer entity will have over 50 years of brewing experience, a huge portfolio of beer, and two respected names within the beer industry at the helm, which means fans of both Boston Beer and Dogfish Head have cause for excitement.
The combined company will still maintain its status as an "independent craft brewery," and Koch and Calagione will work closely together – Calagione will join the board of directors at Boston Beer (he and Mariah Calagione will be the two largest shareholders of the company besides Koch), and workers at Dogfish Head will transition into Boston Beer as well. The entire merger will be overseen by Boston Beer's CEO, Dave Burwick, and it is expected to take effect in the second half of 2019.
