If you are up to date on your beer trivia or you frequent our website, you might know that Portland, Oregon is home to more breweries than any other city in the country. And after discovering the “Beer Bike” in a city with hops and yeast pumping through it’s veins, we can safely say Portland can do no wrong.
Owners of Metrofiet Cargo Bikes, Phillip Ross and Jamie Nichols, were most likely enjoying a cold brew when, like many great men before them, they pondered how to combine all of the things they loved - beer, bikes, music and pizza - into one amazing contraption.
It was then, that the idea of a one stop mobile-party-bicycle pedaled it’s way into their brains. They would create a bike that serves as a utility vehicle for all of their favorite pastimes. They pitched their idea to Christian Ettinger, owner of Portland’s Hopworks Urban Brewing Co., and their idea came to fruition.
The bike itself is constructed out of aircraft grade steel, and weights 120 pounds sans the beer. It cost around $13,000 to create, an amount which was quickly earned back through advertising. The beer delivery comes from two tap handles atop a wooden bar, that connects to a space for two kegs below.
Local shops and citizens pitched in for the bicycle parts and the boom box. There is even room enough on the back to carry the pizzas, and unconfirmed reports say it transforms in to an Autobot and defends the city by moonlight (though only after the beer is gone).
The bike is used to promote Hopworks Urban Brewing and is also available for hire, where it will pull up to the event toting every party favor you could ever need.
Portland, you’re okay by us.
