Snow, much like Nicholas Cage movies, keeps coming just when you think you’ve seen the worst of it. Not all of us share this sentiment though, and actually even enjoy it. After all it’s one of the few things you can hit people with that is totally acceptable. Plus, if we get enough of it we get to work at home.
But for seven people in the United Kingdom their snow day transcended all of their wildest dreams. While drinking at the Lion Inn this past November, snowdrifts blanketed the roads, doors, and windows of the North Yorkshire bar and inn, trapping five staff members and two patrons for eight days. What ensued must have been the most enjoyable involuntary vacation ever taken.
They spent those eight days drinking, playing board games, and partying. The establishment also doubles as a bed and breakfast, so the lucky patrons had a place to crash besides the top of the bar like the rest of us after an eight day bender.
Sound awesome? That’s what the people that called in literally asking if they could trek through the storm to come and get snowed in with them thought. After a few days, the novelty of being trapped in a bar wore off for some, probably because they realized at some point they had to leave. Chef Daniel Butterworth stated that he started to go a little crazy, and caught himself doing odd things such as talking to himself, but that could have just been the booze.
The bar is situated 1,325 feet above sea level and serves up to 150 people per night. With plenty of coal to keep warm, spirits, food, a warm bed and good company, we can’t think of a better way to spend eight days.
Would you like to be trapped in a pub for 8 days?
