Pubs in Britain are experiencing a rapid decline in beer sales, so they are turning to the food to boost sales.
There are approximately 52000 pubs presently, down from ~58000 in 2006. Pubs are closing at an alarming rate of 25 per week. In the past ten years, beer sales have dropped 17%. Meanwhile, the tax on beer has increased by 35% in only the past 3 years.
Due to the great increase in taxes, many pubs are hoping for tax relief from the government, but in the meantime they’re forced to think of other options.
Philadelphia has tons of great gastropubs, but many already do an equally great job with their food menus as with their beer selection. We should cross our fingers for the fine folks in Britain that things work out – a closed pub is one of the sadder things we can think of.
