Talk about a booze cruise: Carnival’s newest and largest cruise ship, the 3,954 person Carnival Vista, has its own brewery called the Red Frog Pub & Brewery. Helmed by brewmaster Colin Presby, it’s the first of its kind—a brewery on the sea.
Red Frog is a line of pubs on multiple Carnival cruise ships, but the one on the Vista will be the first to brew its own beers on the water. There are three varieties currently — the ThirstyFrog Port Hoppin’ IPA, the ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat with coriander and orange, and the FriskyFrog Java Stout. Each are available at the pub, where you can get service from the brewmaster and his staff, or help yourself via a self-serve draft station, if you’re confident you can pour well.
The whole process takes place on the ship, including milling the barley. The kettles are even heated by the ship’s own steam system. For those who are curious about the process, Presby offers 12 person tours that include a tasting.
Presby started homebrewing in 2006, then worked with Carol Stoudt, the country’s first female brewmaster, and ran a brewery in his hometown of Reading, PA. Now, at the age of 31, he’s the world’s first nautical brewer.
If you’re interested in the beers, you’ll have to grab a ticket for the cruise, as the beers are only sold on the ship. It could be the perfect gift for that seafaring beer connoisseur in your family.
