The town of Zalec in Slovenia, already known for its contribution to the beer world in the form of hops—it is set in the Lower Savinja Valley, which has been called “the valley of green gold”—is set to begin on a monument to the local beer scene in the form of a massive beer fountain in one of its parks.
The fountain, which will cost around $400,000, won’t be the typical massive fountain you would imagine in a park or public square. Instead, from the initial drawings, it looks like a series of small water fountains that will dispense beer instead of water. The beer will, of course, feature the local hops, and will only cost visitors the scant price of around $7 for a commemorative mug and three 10-ounce pours.
The town council is touting this as an opportunity to increase foreign and domestic tourism, but we can’t imagine people would travel far and wide for basically a large tap system in the middle of a public park. And while the beer is admittedly cheap, there is no word yet on who will make it or where it will come from, so it could really be anything. But we suppose you can’t complain if you’re getting almost a liter of beer (and a free mug) for $7.
All in all, if you happen to be a town away (Zalec is only about 35 miles from capital Ljubljana), it might be worth a quick trip. At least until they announce what kind of beer will be on fountain.
