Escape From New York Pizza
This cash-only pizza joint has been serving New York style pizza for 30 years now, and prices have barely changed in that time. Still one of the most authentic, fast and cheap pizza places in the city, Escape is an oasis of affordability in the otherwise expensive North West 23rd neighborhood. (622 NW 23rd Ave; 503-227-5423)
Hotlips Pizza
Portland’s own pizza chain, Hotlips Pizza, has been serving pizza by the slice since 1984. Hotlips continues to work with local farms to produce exceptional and unique products, including vegan and gluten-free pizzas. Pints here are a 20 oz Imperial size, and growlers to go are also offered. (Multiple Locations)
Sizzle Pie
The two Sizzle Pie locations, on both side of Burnside, generally cater to the after hours crowd, as they are open until 3 AM on weekdays, and 4 AM on weekends. They both serve great slices of greasy pizza to help soak up alcohol, as well as a local tap and bottle list while operating at bar hours. (624 E Burnside St. & 926 W Burnside St.; 503-234-7437)
Oasis Cafe
Another Portland pizza staple, Oasis has been serving up its signature slices for decades now. It’s the perfect spot to grab a pint of microbrewed beer and watch the Hawthorne shopping crowd. (3701 SE Hawthorne Blvd.; 503-231-0901)
Pizza Schmizza
Another pizza chain, it’s easy to find a Schmizza in most neighborhoods in the city. Schmizza locations operate as bars as well as pizza spots, with affordable drinks, especially at happy hour. (Multiple Locations)
Straight from New York
Like Sizzle Pie, Straight From New York is open late on weekends for those looking for New York style pizza after the bars close. Before the bars close however, it serves pints of beer and glasses of wine. (3330 SE Belmont St.; 971-279-5970)
Mississippi Pizza
The pizzas and beers at Mississippi are great, but this spot is lauded mostly for its fantastic venue space, hosting local and touring acts most nights of the week. (3552 N Mississippi Ave.; 503-288-3231)
Via Chicago
Most pizza places in Portland opt for the New York style pizza, but Via Chicago, as the name suggests, serves slices of thick, Chicago style deep dish. Customers can grab a pint of beer or glass of wine to accompany their pizza, or take growlers of beer and bottles of wine to go. (2013 NE Alberta St.; 503-719-6809)
Black Bird
Formerly Vincente’s Pizza, Black Bird was recently opened by the owners of Swift Lounge. Black Bird retains the quality established by its predecessor and sports an excellent cocktail menu, including the iconic Swift mason jar drinks. It’s open late too, until 2 AM. (1935 SE Hawthorne Blvd.; 503-236-5223)
