“My mother taught me the secrets of intergalactic cooking…And then I ate her,” proclaims GWARbar’s website, metal band, GWAR, and restaurateur, Travis Croxton’s, GWAR-themed restaurant that opened in Richmond, Virginia this past week.
Hailing from Richmond, Virginia themselves, GWAR is a thrash metal band known for its outrageous performances, grotesque costumes and lots and lots of fake blood. GWAR decided to turn to the food industry and open up a “GWAR-B-Q” restaurant. The project has been in the works for years, and the passing of GWAR’s leader, Dave Brockie, has motivated the band to turn his dreams into a reality. Last year, GWAR started an Indiegogo for the restaurant. Even though GWARbar fell short of its $50,000 goal, the restaurant opened on January 2, in the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood.
GWAR guitarist Mike Derks, commonly referred to as “Balsac the Jaws of Death,” told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that he wants it to be “somewhere you could go eat a Twinkie–but an upscale Twinkie.” The menu features other items Derks refers to on GWARbar’s Indiegogo page as “gourmet junk food,” such as house-made hot dogs and burgers, and an array of cocktails that will “flow as freely as the blood of GWAR’s enemies,” including GWARtinis and tiki drinks. The décor is true to GWAR’s image, with fake blood splattered on the walls and floor.
Although the restaurant is small, offering only 40 seats and an additional 12 at the bar, they are hoping to expand next year. GWARbar is located on 217 West Clay Street, and is currently open seven days a week, starting at 4 PM.
