There may be no finer tradition in football than the lauded tailgate—fired up grills keeping the cold at bay, the smell of burgers and sausages wafting through the parking lot as cornhole bags and beer pong balls fly through the air, and the “brooding and intense black fruit essence” of a beautiful glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.
That’s right! Now Eagles fans can put their snowball and battery fiascos behind them and show the world just how classy they really are with Rollout, a 2011 Cab Sauv made in honor of the team’s 80th anniversary, crafted by winemaker Samuel Spencer. The wine “commemorates the strong commitment to the city and its fans”—which is done by overlooking any local wineries and going to California for the grapes.
Production was limited to 5,000 bottles, so fans should probably hang on to them rather than throw it at any officials, visiting players, or opposing fans. And when your friends inevitably make fun of you for bringing a bottle of wine to your tailgate, remind them that the bold red wine pairs perfectly with burgers and steak—but you should probably save the Camembert pairing for another time.
The wine, which garnered a semi-respectable 88 in Wine Enthusiast magazine, is available in Philadelphia state stores and some New Jersey liquor outlets and retails for $34.99, but has been seen on sale for as low as $18 per bottle.
