Even amidst the flourishing cocktail scene we’re currently experiencing, there’s room for another cocktail book: "The 12 Bottle Bar” by David and Lesly Jacobs Solmonson. We know what you’re thinking, how is this book any different than the multitude of cocktail books that have been published in the last year? This gem of a guide promises you a new way to drink at home.
Nearly five years ago the husband and wife team started 12bottlebar.com after experiencing the monetary burn of a $16 cocktail in Los Angeles. The couple’s exploration of spirits has grown into this published guide by Workman Publishing ($14.95).
"The 12 Bottle Bar" guides you through making hundreds of cocktails with only brandy, dry gin, genever, amber rum, white rum, rye whiskey, vodka, orange liqueur, dry vermouth, sweet vermouth, aromatic bitters, and orange bitters.
Don't panic if that seems like a lot of bottles. You’ve got options. If you’re not fully stocked yet, and don’t have the 12-bottle bar at home, there’s sections for the “1 Bottle Bar,” “3 Bottle Bar” and the “4 Bottle Bar”.
In addition to recipes, you’ll find resources such as the “Tools of the Trade” chapter, tips on how to be a good host, virgin cocktail recipes, and tips on garnish, syrups and liqueurs, and more.
The Solmonson’s may not have years of bartending experience but they’re experienced in finding a practical and efficient style of home entertaining. Other contributors to The 12 Bottle Bar include David Wondrich of “Imbibe,” Gary Regan of “The Joy of Mixology,” and Dale Degroff of “King Cocktail.”
Our advice: Get this book. Use it often. "The 12 Bottle Bar" is well-written and useful. It pushes the reader to experiment with the guidance needed to master the home bar.
