Though younger Americans are drinking more wine these days, many of us aren’t as familiar with the ins and outs of everything vinous, with good reason — there’s lots to know. The folks at WineInvestment.com put together a useful infographic that can help you get a leg up, from terroir to tannins to color tone.
For example, did you realize strong wines can be drunk up to 10 days after opening? Or that swirling liquid in your glass after a pour is more correctly called “swinging” your wine? (We didn’t.) Perhaps the most useful part of the graphic is a key to what shape glass best suits different wine styles or varietals.
Then there’s the handy chart that outlines a slew of aroma descriptors, so you can prep your reactions to a great bottle in advance. “Oh, I love the butterscotch notes, and that flinty undertone works so well to balance the blackcurrent nose,” will flow easily from your lips. Or not. Either way, the full graphic is worth a look.
