It’s not the first crowdsourced beer, but it is a clever one. Scottish craft brewery BrewDog just launched #MashTag, a beer with a recipe created by popular vote. The hashtag itself was used to track votes for what kind of style the beer ended up as — Twitter followers and Facebook fans were given a week to weigh in. The resulting brew is a 7.5% ABV American brown ale made with New Zealand hops and aged on hazelnuts and oak chips. It has an IBU of
BrewDog has made a name for itself with extreme and unusual beers, like 2010’s absurdity End of History, a limited-edition 55% ABV barleywine packaged in real taxidermied squirrels. This beer promises to be much more drinkable. It’s sold in 330-ml (11.2-oz.) bottles, and is available in the BrewDog online store. There’s a £40.00 shipping charge to the States, so hopefully some US distributors will pick up #MashTag and bring it here soon.
