Yes, they actually did it. Last spring, Denver's Wynkoop Brewing Co. sent out a press release and debuted a video announcing a new beer, brewed with “Rocky Mountain oysters,” aka bull testicles, which — when seasoned and fried — are one of Colorado’s most popular snacks. The April 1 date of the announcement was a giveaway, however; the whole thing was an April Fools joke.
Outrageousness nothwithstanding, the response from brewers, beer writers and craft beer drinkers was generally positive — many thought the joke was real, and expressed interest in trying the ballsy brew. So, head brewer Andy Brown and team decided to go for it.
The eight barrel batch of Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout that will debut just in time for the Great American Beer Festival was made with 25 pounds of hand-sliced and roasted bull testicles, along with locally-grown malts, roasted barley, sea salt and Stryian Goldings hops. It carries an ABV of 7%, and is 3 BPB (that would be “balls per barrel”). Look for the brew at Wynkoop’s GABF table if you're headed out for the event. Do you have the balls to try it?
