A New Study Shows that Wine Glasses Are Getting Bigger and Bigger

Good news for winos: a new study from the University of Cambridge says that the size of a standard wine glass is a full seven times larger than it was in 1700, according to Cosmopolitan.

Researchers looked at resources ranging from eBay to the Royal Household's collection of glassware and found that while a wine glass in 1700 held just 66 mL of liquid (about 2.2 oz), a wine glass today holds a whopping 449 mL (about 16 oz), which is clearly quite a drastic difference. 

The reason for this increase is thanks to a whole host of factors — the social consumption of wine didn't really become popular until the 20th century, and even then, it took until the 1980s for the trend to really take hold. Pretty soon, consumers were looking for specific glasses to pair with specific wines, and as interest in stemware size became commonplace, bartenders across the world started stocking larger glasses.

Could this trend continue? Possibly. In that case, maybe Amy Schumer's Friday Night Lights spoof will become a reality.
