Portland's Best Vegan and Vegetarian Bars

In recent years, Portland has embraced meat, with places like Olympic Provisions, Laurelhurst Market, Lardo, Ox, Beast and many others dominating the restaurant scene. Still, Portland remains one of the friendliest cities for those who eschew animal products. Whether you’re vegan or lacto-ovo-vegetarian, there are bars that cater to your preferences. Some of the following bar are entirely vegetarian or vegan, while others are bars that dedicate a substantial portion of their menu to such culinary options. If we missed your favorite spot, let us know on our facebook or twitter.

Bar of the Gods
BOG, at the top of SE Hawthorne, has remained unchanged in its aesthetic or popularity for years, and it’s still as charming of a dive as ever. It serves a small menu of wraps, salads and soups, but most items can be ordered vegan. (4801 SE Hawthorne Blvd.; 503-232-2037)

Conquistador
It’s easy to miss that the Mexican focused menu is entirely vegetarian at Conquistador. Its black bean tacos or heaping nacho plate will satisfy any appetite, though. Try their happy hour for a great deal and some excellent margaritas, and then play some pinball at the back of the lounge. (2045 SE Belmont St. 503-232-3227)

The Sweet Hereafter
If you’re looking for an egg white in your whiskey sour, look elsewhere—this beautiful bar is entirely vegan. It also happens to make exceptional cocktails, and its creative menu offers a lot more than your standard meat substitute (though those are good here, too). The cocktails can get pricey, but frugal patrons can always order one of their potent mason jar drinks. (3326 SE Belmont St.)

Harlow
Not a bar, but almost entirely vegan (and wheat free, as well), this trendy, health-conscious Hawthorne cafe is always bustling, and serves up an impressive cocktail menu, with drinks for any time of day. (3632 SE Hawthorne Blvd.; 971-255-0138)

The Bye and Bye
The NE Portland companion to the Sweet Hereafter, it has the same focus on craft cocktails and fantastic vegan food, but with a slightly more casual atmosphere, as well as lower prices on drinks and food. (1011 NE Alberta St.)

Casa Diablo
Likely the only vegan strip-club in the US, Casa Diablo has earned almost as much notoriety for its unconventional menu as it has for its large staff of lovely, talented dancers. (2839 NW St Helens Rd 503-222-6600)

Hungry Tiger
Not entirely vegan, but every item can be made vegan if desired, and on vegan-dedicated equipment to avoid any sort of cross contamination. This bar also had a great patio for the outdoorsy types. (207 SE 12th Ave.; 503-238-4321)

Star Bar
Tucked under the Morrison Bridge next to the Bistro Montage, this hip bar is very friendly to vegans and vegetarians, offering vegan substitutions for burgers and sandwiches free of charge. (639 SE Morrison St.; 503-232-5553)

White Owl Social Club
This stylish space in the industrial district won the vegan burger award for Portland’s Burger Week this year, and with good reason. Though there is some meat on the menu, it’s a mostly vegan/vegetarian bar, as well as a great music venue and cocktail bar, with a huge patio. (305 SE 8th Ave.; 503-236-9672)
