An interest in craft beer can be like opening up Pandora’s box. Once you taste your first imported, rare or never-before-heard-of beer, you instantly set out on a search for the next delectable brew sliding by under-the-radar. One such beer is Abraxxxas, recently brought to U.S. shores by renowned importers the Shelton Brothers. The smoked lichtenhainer weisse is brewed by Freigeist Bierkultur, a small subsidiary of Germany’s Brauerei Braustelle that specializes in historic German beers otherwise lost to time.
Abraxxxas pours from a 16.9-oz. bottle a hazy golden orange color, appearing as a relatively standard wheat-based beer, not unlike a mass-produced weisse beer. This appearance does not prepare one for the unique set of aromas presented in the nose. Strong, wheat beer notes are integrated with an intriguing wisp of smoke.
Also unlike your typical weisse beer, unique flavors are found immediately upon first taste. Abraxxxas is slightly tart — a surprise compared to a typical weizenbock or other German wheat style. This tartness is followed by a distinct taste of flavorful smoked malt, a signature quality of this lost style. Full bodied and bright, Abraxxxas presents a very unique, historical drinking experience. At 6% ABV, it is easily enjoyed alone or shared with a curious friend.
Freigeist Bierkultur is a welcome presence in the world of European craft brew. Trying unique or forgotten styles is an intriguing venture for any craft beer enthusiast, and this new brewery offers the opportunity to do just that. Thanks to the Shelton Brothers’ wide distribution network, Abrazxxas is available throughout the country. Search this out beers if you’re interested in sipping a bit of something different.
