London's Fastest Growing Gin, Portobello Road, Now Available in New York

Take a class at the Ginstitute
by Talia Aroshas on Aug 31, 2015 in Liquor

Nestled away on the top two floors of the 19th century Portobello Star public house, Portobello Road Gin is currently leading the London-style gin renaissance, and is now available for the first time at select markets in the Northeast United States.

The Ginstitute, home of Portobello Road Gin, is London's smallest museum and gin symposium lab, and hosts history classes on gin, as "Ginterns" are guided through developing their very own bespoke gin- a recipe that is kept on file should they ever want to reorder following their complimentary bottle. On display at the museum is a very unique array of gin-affiliated keepsakes, including Jerry Thomas' business card and the alembic still, "Copernicus the Second."

The need for a gin that could call the Ginstitute home was realized by veteran bartenders and restaurant owners, Jake Burger, Ged Feltham, and Paul Coates. It took nine months of experimentation and travels to Tuscany and beyond for the best ingredients available, and eventually, the Portobello Road Gin was born.

The exquisite concoction of nine botanicals is truly unique to Portobello Road Gin, prompting sales in upwards of 3,000 bars and restaurants in England.

“We wanted it to work in a host of different styles of cocktails and still create a premium gin that wasn’t in the premium gin category in terms of price. It needed to be affordable for consumers and something that’s an educatory gin. Something that had a traditional element, but tells the story of London Dry Gin and London’s history with gin,” said Tom Coates, brand director.

Portobello Road Gin took home a Gold Medal from the 2014 San Francisco Spirit Awards, and is quickly garnering much attention from all over the U.S.
